Frequently asked questions

After we assess your qualification portfolio, you will receive an outcome notice. This notice will explain the outcome of the qualification assessment. If we assess you as qualified for general registration, this notice will give you instructions on how to apply for general registration.

We will then review your application for registration to ensure you meet the requirements for general registration as an occupational therapist. This includes the Board’s Registration Standards.

To be considered qualified, you must complete the competence assessment. This takes place during a period of supervised practice under limited registration. The Occupational Therapy Council manages the competence assessment.

For details see the Competence assessment page.

For details of relevant fees see the Occupational Therapy Board schedule of fees and the Occupational Therapy Council schedule of fees.

The application fee for qualification portfolio assessment is not refundable.

We aim to reply to you within 21 days of receiving your application.

This process can take longer if we need to request more information or documents from you, or if information must be requested or verified from international regulators or education providers.

If your qualification as an occupational therapist is recognised through the comparable regulator pathway or the recognised qualification pathway, the time taken to assess your qualification portfolio will be faster. To avoid delays, ensure that you provide and we can verify all the required documents.

If we need to assess your international qualification portfolio, the process may take more time. The length of time depends on the complexity of the assessment. We do a thorough assessment of all portfolios. It is not possible to fast-track these assessments.

For details of the qualification assessment process, see the Assessment of international qualifications page.

The Occupational Therapy Council conducts skills assessments for skilled migration. Refer to the OT Council website for details.

Yes, you should provide information about all your formal, completed qualifications in occupational therapy. We will review these when deciding if you are qualified for general registration.

We will recognise the previous OT Council Stage 1 Desktop assessment and Stage 2 supervised practice audit arrangements for registration purposes You will be able to apply for general registration once you have completed the supervised practice. You do not have to submit a new qualification portfolio for assessment.

Alternatively, if your qualification is on the list of qualifications that are recognised by the Board, you can apply for general registration immediately. If your application is approved, you can discontinue your supervised practice. For details of the international qualifications that are recognised by the Board, see the Recognised international qualifications page.
